It is essential that as much of the trash as possible is removed from the seed. The larger pieces can cause blockages and fine particles, such as silica, can cause excessive wear of the internal parts of the Press. A typical Cleaner is the vibratory screen consisting of two screens designed to separate the seed from both the large pieces and the fine particles. Some seeds such as Castor and Ground Nut require cleaners with aspiration equipment.

The Hammer Mill is used to break Palm Kernels, Copra or Un-Decorticated Cottonseed among others. The material is broken down into particles, typically, no bigger than 4mm. This machine provides the easiest and most cost effective way of simply breaking up the feed material. It will not however guarantee a particular particle size. Nor can it guarantee to break every seed.

Seeds such as, Rape Seed, Decorticated Cotton or Sesame are passed through a Flaking Roll stand, via a roll or vibratory feeder, where they are rolled and flaked to mechanically break down the fibrous structure and crack the seed coats. All seeds must pass through a gap of fixed size so a particular particle size, and breakage of every seed can be guaranteed if the Rolls are set up properly.

Seed is cooked for a number of reasons, although generally there are three main reasons. Firstly to further rupture the oil cells by raising the temperature of the moisture trapped in the oil cells. The application of heat swells the moisture and the oil trapped in the oil cells and further breaks down the seed structure. The application of heat provided by the cooker also reduces the viscosity of the oil to make it more free flowing and easier to extract, Finally and perhaps most importantly the cooker is also used to control the overall moisture content of the feed to obtain the optimum conditions for the feed at entry to the screw press. |

De Smet Rosedowns screw presses are designed to produce maximum oil yield for minimum cost and are fitted with the most advanced, computer designed, worm assemblies in the most durable materials. Downtime and maintenance are kept to a minimum to ensure quick pay back. The press also comes complete with a set of tools for essential maintenance. |

The Cake Breaker is designed to reduce the size of the Cake pieces
produced by the Press to make them more suitable for further processing.
The Breaker consists of a set of Rotating Knives which intermesh with a stationary Grid. The scissor action of the blades passing the grid breaks the Cake into 25mm - 50 mm pieces. Located directly at the Press discharge the Breaker is working on the cake before it has a chance to dry and bake hard so wear and power consumption are minimised. |

The De Smet Rosedowns Press Control System, or Compress as it is known, is a PLC based system, that requires no specialist training to operate. The COMPRESS system controls the flow of material into the press. Normally the operate set a required operating level, the PLC will hold that level unless action is required to prevent the press from overloading or because there in no feed material reaching the press. Because the Press is being constantly monitored and corrective actions taken as required The press can be pushed harder without fear of overloading or mechanical damage to the press. The system will also produce operating reports and can be integrated into a full plant control system. |

The oil is clarified by a vertical pressure leaf filter. The filtered crude oil is pumped via a filtered oil tank to the client's oil storage tanks. After each filtration cycle, the cake is dried using compressed air before being discharged for re-cycling to the press. This design minimises the labour requirements for filter cleaning.
