![]() A field of Rape Seed - The Raw Material |
Vegetable Oil is a staple food stuff and the industry that has grown up around its production is a highly varied one. On one hand are the big multinational commodity Processors, while on the other hand small local producers still operate. Local economics, market forces and not a little politics will determine which appear where in the world. Most Seeds and Nuts contain a proportion of oil, usually somewhere between 20% and 60% oil. While some crops are grown specifically for their oil, for others oil is not the primary product. For example Maize is grown for its starches and sugars, the Oil extracted from the Germ is almost a By-Product. Similarly cotton principally grown as a source of raw material to the textile industry, is also a source of oil While Soya may be the largest single Oilseed crop it is not generally mechanically extracted on a large scale. It has a relatively low oil content to start with, and lends itself to direct solvent extraction. On the other hand for crops such as Sunflower or Rape Seed (Canola) with 40%-50% oil content Pre-Pressing prior to solvent extraction is a must. The objective of Pre-Pressing is to reduce the Oil content to 20% or below so that the Solvent plant can work more efficiently. Today increased interest is being expressed in the mechanical extraction processes. Pressing is a Chemical free process, and as such is attractive to the organic market. Additionally the planning requirements of a mechanical extraction plant are much less onerous than for a Solvent Plant. |

Rosedowns has been involved with all areas of the Vegetable oil industry for most of our long existence. As part of the De Smet Group we are still involved in every aspect of the Vegetable oil industry. Today within the group we are specialists in mechanical extraction, our core products are Screw Presses or Expellers and the wearing parts for them. Our experience both in the realm of large Pre-Press Plants and the smaller High Pressure Press plants is second to none. We have designed our Sterling Series of Presses from the outset to meet the different needs of the different operators in the Industry. We have 5 different series of Presses, with Full and Pre Press variants of them all, so that we can truly say we have a Press to match any need. |
