The Rendering Industry

A field of Cows

It all Starts here.

Rendering is an old and established business, for as long as meat has been commercially processed man has had to find a way of dealing with those parts of the slaughtered animals that are not directly consumed by Humans.

Approximately 78% of a chicken, 62% of a pig, 54% of a bovine animal and 52% of a sheep is directly consumed.  The remaining percentage is typically recycled in some other way. Some of the By-Products are obvious; Hides for example can be processed for Leather. However the vast majority of the By-Products will end up in a Rendering Plant. Some 95% or more of the intake of a rendering plant will be converted into a useful product, In fact almost all of an animal killed for food will be used in one way or another.

The two main products of a Rendering Plant are Tallow's or Fats and Protein Meals. Tallow is a traditional raw material of the soap and candle industry, but also has uses in the Steel Industry, pet and live stock feeds and as an important source of fatty acids and glycerin to the chemical industry. The Tallow can also be converted into "Bio-Diesel" and used as a renewable fuel oil.

The Protein meal is generally used in the animal feed industry as one ingredient in their feeds. However strict controls and legislation today controls what material can be passed back into the food chain. Consequently "Specified Offal" not fit for feed uses are processed separately and the meal destroyed by incineration, Increasingly this is being investigated as a source of "renewable" energy for electricity generation.

Rosedowns has always recognised the importance of the Rendering Industries. We have supplied Presses, to meet the requirements of this demanding application, since the days of the Maxoil Press.

Since the early 1970's Rosedowns has produced a series of purpose designed Rendering Presses. The first of these was the Mk 3M, followed by the GX, Universal, Low Pressure Greaves and through to the Sterling M Presses of today.

Two 200 Series Sterling Presses
Two 200 Series Sterling M (Sovereign) Presses.

The Sterling Series 'M'  Presses are proven designs. In the last few years we have supplied  them to plants operating in various countries including England, Scotland, Ireland, France, and the USA.

Most significantly the 600 Series Sterling M Presses that we have operating in both the USA and Europe are the largest and most efficient Rendering Presses operating in the World today.
